원불교

원불교는 한문으로 ‘圓佛敎’라 쓴다.
원불교의 ‘圓’은 소태산 대종사가 깨달은 진리에 붙인 이름으로 이 세상 모든 것들의 근본이고3, 진리를 깨달은 성자들의 마음이며4, 진리를 깨닫지 못한 중생衆生5의 본래 마음6을 뜻한다.
원불교의 ‘佛’은 깨닫는다[覺]는 뜻이며 또는 마음을 뜻한다. 여기에서 깨닫는다는 것은 일[事]7과 이치[理]8를 걸림 없이 안다는 것을 말한다.
원불교의 ‘敎’는 진리의 세계로 인도하거나 또는 진리의 세계를 가르치는 뜻이다. 그러므로 ‘圓’, ‘佛’, ‘敎’라는 낱글자를 합한 원불교의 의미는 소태산 대종사가 깨달은 진리 즉 의 진리를 깨치도록 가르치는 종교가 된다.
정산 종사는 원불교의 ‘원’과 ‘불’을 다음과 같이 설명했다

“원圓은 형이상으로 말하면 언어와 명상이 끊어진 자리라 무엇으로써 이를 형용할 수 없으나, 형이하로써 말하면 우주 만유가 다 이 원으로써 표현되어 있으니, 이는 곧 만법의 근원인 동시에 만법의 실재인지라, 이 천지 안에 있는 모든 교법이 비록 천만 가지로 말은 달리하나 그 실은 원 외에는 다시 한 법도 없는 것입니다.” 또 여쭙기를 “원의 뜻이 그와 같이 원융하다면 당돌한 말씀 같사오나 ‘원도圓道’ 또는 ‘원교圓敎’라고 이름하시는 것이 모든 교법을 포용하는데 더 원만하지 않을까요. 불교가 비록 노대 종교일지라도 아직도 세상 인식이 일부의 교의로 짐작하는 이 적지 않은 듯하오니 거기에 대하여 한 번 더 생각해 보심이 어떠하실까요.” 말씀하시기를 “불佛은 곧 깨닫는다는 말씀이요 또는 마음이라는 뜻이니, 원의 진리가 아무리 원만하여 만법을 다 포함하였다 할지라도 깨닫는 마음이 없으면 이는 다만 빈 이치에 불과한 것입니다. 그러므로 원불圓佛 두 글자는 원래 둘이 아닌 진리로서 서로 떠나지 못할 관
계가 있으며….”

분명하게 알아야 할 것이 있다. 원불교는 ‘원도’도 ‘원교’도 아니며, 불교의 한 종파로 이해할 수 있는 ‘원 불교’도 아닌 ‘원·불·교’라는 것이다.
지금까지 소태산 대종사·일원상·원불교에 대해 아주 간단히 설명했다. 이 세 개의 낱말은 원불교를 이해하는 데 기본이 된다.
그러므로 원불교를 알고 싶거나, 원불교의 교도가 되고 싶거나, 20 원불교 이해의 첫걸음 또한, 원불교 교도는 꼭 이해하고 기억해야 할 낱말이다. 이유는 세 개의 낱말이 원불교의 모든 것을 담고 있기 때문이다. 그리고 서로 뗄 수 없는 관계를 맺고 있고, 경중輕重이 없다.
뗄 수 없고 경중이 없는 이유는 소태산 대종사가 없는 일원상과 원불교를 생각할 수 없고, 일원상이 없는 소태산 대종사와 원불교를 생각할 수 없고, 원불교가 없는 소태산 대종사와 일원상을 생각할 수 없기 때문이다.
소태산 대종사·일원상·원불교는 삼위일체三位一体의 관계이다.

 

Won-Buddhism is written ‘圓佛敎’ in Chinese character.

‘圓’ of Won-Buddhism is the name given to the truth that the Founding Master Sotaesan realized, which means the fundamental principle of all the things in the world and the mind of sages who realized the truth as well as the original mind of sentient beings who did not realize the truth.

‘佛’ of Won-Buddhism means awakening [覺] or mind. Awakening here means knowing human affairs and universe principles without constraints.

‘敎’ of Won-Buddhism means guiding to the world of truth or teaching the world of truth. Therefore, the meaning of Won-Buddhism combining three letters ‘圓’, ‘佛’, ‘敎’ is the religion that teaches people to awaken the truth of that the Founder Master Sotaesan realized.

 

The Cardinal Master Chongsan explained ‘Won’ (Circle) and ‘Pul (Buddha)’ as follows:

“Won (Circle,圓), in metaphysical terms, is that realm where language, names, and signs are extinguished; hence, it is impossible to describe. However, in physical terms, the myriad things in the universe are all expressed through this Won; hence, it is simultaneously the root source of the dharma and the true reality of those myriad dharma. Therefore, although all the various religious teachings in Heaven and Earth may differ in their expression in millions of ways, in reality there is no a single dharma other than Won." The visitor asked, "If the meaning of Won is in this way so perfectly interfused, may I be so bold as to suggest that naming this Order Wondo (The Way of Won, 圓道) or Wongyo (The Won Teachings, 圓敎) might more adequately subsume all religious teachings? Although Buddhism may be an ancient and great religion, in the eyes of the world, its religious principles are often presumed to be partial. What about reconsidering this matter?" The Master replied, "Pul ('Buddha' 佛) means 'awakened', and also 'mind'. Even though the truth of Won is complete and thus subsumes the myriad dharma, it would be a vacuous principle without the awakening mind. Thus, the two terms Won and Pul are originally a non-dualistic truth and are inseparable...

There is one thing you should know clearly. Won-Buddhism is neither ‘Wondo’ nor ‘Wonkyo’ nor 'Won Buddhism' that can be misunderstood as a partial doctrine but ‘Won-Pul-Gyo (Won-Buddhism).

Until now, I explained the Founding Master Sotaesan, Il-Won-Sang and Won-Buddhism very briefly. These three words become the basics to understand Won-Buddhism.

 

Therefore, those who want to know Won-Buddhism or those who want to become a Won-Buddhist, or all Won-Buddhists should understand and remember these three words because these three words contain all about Won-Buddhism. They have inseparable relation and no need to distinguish the degree of importance. It's because we cannot think of Il-Won-Sang and Won-Buddhism without the Founding Master Sotaesan and we cannot think of the Founding Master Sotaesan and Won-Buddhism without Il-Won-Sang and same as we cannot think of the Founding Master Sotaesan and Il-Won-Sang without Won-Buddhism.

The Founding Master Sotaesan, Il-Won-Sang and Won-Buddhism have the relation of trinity (三位一体).
