탄생
소태산 대종사는 1891년 5월 5일1에 전라남도 영광군 백수면 길룡리 영 촌에서 아버지 박 성삼2 어머니 강릉 유씨3의 4남 2녀 가운데 3남으로 탄생했다.
소태산 대종사의 어릴 때 이름은 ‘진섭鎭燮’ 또는 처화處化였고, 성품과 외형은 《원불교 교사圓佛敎敎史》에서 다음과 같이 표현했다.
기상이 늠름凜凜하시고 도량度量이 활달하시며, 모든 사물을 대함에 주의하는 천성이 있어, 보고 듣고 말하고 행동함을 항상 범연히 아니하시며, 매양 어른들을 좇아 그 모든 언행에 묻기를 좋아하시며, 남과의 약속에 한번 하기로 한 일은 아무리 어려운 일이라도 반드시 실행하시었다.
《원불교 교사》 제2장 1. 대종사의 탄생과 유시
소태산 대종사의 성품은 그의 나이 4세 때의 일화를 통하여 그일부가 엿보인다.
늦은 봄철이었다. 영촌 사람들은 동학군東學軍이 온다는 소문이 들려와 불안해하고 있었다. 동학군은 전봉준全琫準. 1855~1895. 동학농민군 대장이 탐관오리貪官汚吏7의 수탈과 외국 세력의 침투에 분노한 농민들을 모아 조직한 군대로서, 동학의 신앙과 엄정한 군기軍紀로 단결된 군대였다. 그런데 이를 가장한 폭민暴民들이 백성들의 생명과 재물을 빼앗아 가기 때문에 동학군을 두려워했다. 진섭은 어른들이 하는 말을 흘려듣지 않았다.
어느 날 아침이었다. 진섭은 여느 날과 같이 아버지와 함께 식 사하였다. 그때 진섭은 자기의 밥이 아버지의 밥보다 적다 하여 아버지의 밥을 자기의 그릇으로 덜어 왔다. 아버지인 박성삼은 어 린 진섭이 하는 짓이 귀엽기도 했지만 버릇이 없는 일이므로 꾸지 람을 했다.
“네가 어른의 밥을 아무런 말도 없이 가져가니 그 죄가 마땅히 매를 맞아야 하겠다.” “아버지가 저를 때리기로 하시면 제가 먼저 아버지를 놀라시게 하겠습니다.” 박성삼은 어린 아들의 말을 귀엽게 여기고 식사를 마치자 집안 의 일을 하다 피곤을 느껴 잠시 방에서 쉬고 있었다. 마루에서 놀 던 진섭이 아버지가 누워 있는 방을 향해 소리를 질렀다. “저기 노루목8에 동학군이 나타났다. 저기 노루목에 동학군이 쳐들어온다.” 방에서 잠시 눈을 붙이고 있던 박성삼은 진섭이 지르는 소리에 크게 놀래어 자신도 모르게 방에서 뛰쳐나와 집 뒤 대나무 숲으로 숨었다. 그런데 상당한 시간이 지나도 별스런 기척이 없었다. 이 때 진섭의 어머니 유 씨가 그 광경을 보고 불안한 마음에 마을을 둘러보았다. 그러나 어느 곳에서도 동학군의 자취는 찾아볼 수 없 었다. 집으로 돌아온 유 씨가 진섭에게 동학군이 나타났다는 사실 여부를 확인하자, 진섭이 말했다. “제가 아침밥을 먹을 때 아버지와 약속한 말을 실천했을 뿐입 니다.”
실로 어처구니없는 일이었지만, 진섭은 일방적인 약속이라도 실천하는 것이 어릴 때부터 굳어 있었다.
진섭이 5세 때 여름철이었다.
그날은 동무들과 마을 앞 개울가 에서 놀고 있었다. 그때 두 동무가 갑자기 크게 놀라 소리를 내며 부둥켜안은 채 울었다. 진섭은 하던 놀이를 멈추고 동무들에게 다가가 우는 이유를 물 었다. 그때 두 동무가 떨리는 손으로 부근에 있는 큰 뱀을 가리켰다. 진섭은 가지고 있던 막대기로 뱀의 앞을 가로막으며 말했다.
“너 이놈! 뱀인 네가 어찌하여 사람을 놀라게 하느냐?” 진섭은 뱀을 향해 큰 소리를 질렀고, 뱀은 머리를 돌려 수풀 속 으로 숨어들었다.
어린 진섭의 대담성은 한두 번이 아니고, 생활에서 자주 일어 났다. 그래서 마을 사람들은 진섭을 두고 ‘어리지만 대담하고 신의가 있다.’고 말했다.
The Founding Master Sotaesan was born on May 5, 18911 in Yongchon, Killryong-li of Baeksu-myeon, Yongkwang-gun, Cheollanamdo as the third son among 4 sons 2 daughters under his father Park Songsam2 and his mother Yu Chong-chon3.
The name of the Founding Master Sotaesan when he was young, was ‘Jinseop (鎭燮)’ or Cheohwa (處化) , and his personality and appearance was expressed in 《The History of Won-Buddhism (圓佛敎敎史》as below.
Sotaesan was conscientious5 and magnanimous 6. He carefully watched over all things and accounted for them without any carelessness of sight, hearing, speech, or action. Favoring to follow his elders, he was curious and loved to ask about their activities and their explanations of their activities. he always kept his word, and acted on his promises to other people regardless of difficult situations.
《The History of Won-Buddhism》 Chapter 2 1. Birth of Sotaesan and his Youth
The character o the Founding Master Sotaesan is glimpsed through the episode when he was 4 years old.
It was late Spring. People in the village of Yongchon were worrying about the coming of Tonghak revolutionary armies. Tonghak revolutionary armies were organized by Chun Bong-Jun (全琫準. 1855~1895. Captain of Tonghak revolutionary army)
who gathered peasants angered by the exploitation of corrupt officials and the infiltration of foreign forces but it was an army united by the faith of Donghak and strict disciplines. But the ordinary people was afraid of Donghak army because the rioters disguised as Donghak army took away the lives and the wealth of people. Jinseop never listened to the adults without much attention.
One day in the morning, Jinseop was having a breakfast with his father as usual. At that time, Jinseop found that his rice in the bowl was less than that of his father and took some of rice in his father's bowl to his bowl. His father, Park Song-sam thought Jinseop's action cute but impolite so he scolded his son.
“You took the adult meal without saying anything, so you deserve to be beaten."
“If you decide to hit me, I'll surprise you first."
Park Songsam thought his little son's words are cute and after meal, he felt a little tired and he was taking a rest in his room for a while. Jinseop who was playing at the floor, suddenly shouted toward the room where his father was laying for a rest.
“Donghak army is coming there Norumok8 ! Donghak army is coming there Norumok!
Park Seongsam who was taking a nap for a while in his room, was surprised at the shouting voice of his son and ran out of his room and hid into the bamboo groove behind his house. However, after a long time, there was no sign. At that time, Jinseop's mother worried about such situation and looked around the village. But there was no sign of Donghak army found anywhere. His mother returned home and asked his son whether Donghak army came actually. Jinseop said, "I just practiced my words I told my father during a breakfast.
One summer day, when Jinseop was 5 years old, he was playing in the small river in front of his village with his friends. At that time, two friends suddenly surprised at something and burst out crying, hugging each other.
Jinseop stopped playing a game and approached his friends and asked why they were crying. Two friends pointed out a big serpent around them, with trembling hands.
Jinseop blocked the front of the serpent with the stick in his hand and said.
“You naughty snake! How can you surprise a man as just a snake ?”
Jinseop shouted out the serpent and then the serpent turned its head toward bushes to hide it.
